The 8th grade team from El Monte City School District’s Gidley School won first place at the Los Angeles Regional SeaPerch Competition held on March 31, 2015 at USC. 

Sea Perch is an innovative underwater robotics program where students learn about robotics, engineering, sciences, and mathematics while building an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).  Throughout the project, students learned engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications.

In addition to winning first place in the Ring Retrieval Competition, Gidley accumulated 38.5 points, for the Ring Retrieval, the Obstacle Course, Poster & Oral Presentation to take overall first place for the Elementary & Middle School Division. 

The team is sponsored by Ms. Pam Dominguez.  She is their teacher, coach and motivator. The team consists of four 8th grade members: Marco Hernandez, Vivian Ha, Connie Chan, and Kelly Luo. Hernandez serves as the team captain as well as the electrical and mechanical engineer. Ha and Chan are the systems engineers. Luo is the materials engineer. Gidley student team members were selected from a group of 8th students based on their academics, enthusiasm and ability to work as a team.
